Lately, I've been pondering alot on the Meaning of Death. Largely due to the many freak accidental death that occurred rather "near" me.

2 servicemen died in Taiwan following the crash of the Taiwanese F5(pilots on board died too); An auntie died on the spot when the tree fell onto her on a stormy morning at bukit batok nature reserve; Same day, a PE teacher trainee died also in his sleep when a tree fell onto the group of teachers at Mt Ophir, first overseas camp organised ever for teacher trainee (a close fren was there too, he came back, not really himself till now); another auntie died on the spot after being knocked down by a taxi along bukit batok road (i saw the white sheet covering the body, and read the news the day after).

I teared, reading news on these death, these articles related how much the parents and loved ones griefed, how many undone things the 2 servicemen wanted to do for their loved ones (mothers' day), for themselves...

Well, i know there are many many more such unexpected deaths happening ard many people everyday...

So, what is the Meaning of Death?

Did some google search on the topic "Death"...

"Death can be a teacher. Only in facing death, those of loved ones and our own, can we be free from the fear of it and learn the lessons it has to teach about life. "

"It [death] sweeps through our lives, often without warning, and nothing can prevent it. They also point out how most people hide their heads in the sand, pretending death will never affect them, that this life will go on forever."

Did any of the above verses trigger any thoughts?

Does the finality of death make life meaningless? Although many people feel that it does, a moment's reflection will show that death is irrelevant to the question of the meaning of life: If human beings were naturally immortal--that is, if there were no such thing as death--there would still be a question about whether or not our lives had meaning. The underlying assumption behind the claim that life is meaningless because it ends in death is that for something to be meaningful or worthwhile it must last forever. The fact that many of the things we value (such as relationships with others) and activities that we find worthwhile (such as working on a political campaign or raising a child) do not last forever shows that life does not need to be everlasting to be meaningful. We can also show that everlasting life may not be meaningful by providing examples of lives which last forever yet are meaningless.

Death appears to render life meaningless for many people because they feel that there is no point in developing character or increasing knowledge if our progress is ultimately going to be thwarted by death. However, there is a point in developing character and increasing knowledge before death overtakes us: to provide peace of mind and intellectual satisfaction to our lives and to the lives of those we care about for their own sake because pursuing these goals enriches our lives. From the fact that death is inevitable it does not follow that nothing we do matters now. On the contrary, our lives matter a great deal to us. If they did not, we would not find the idea of our own death so distressing--it wouldn't matter that our lives will come to an end. The fact that we're all eventually going to die has no relevance to whether our activities are worthwhile in the here and now: For an ill patient in a hospital a doctor's efforts to alleviate pain certainly does matter despite the fact that 'in the end' both the doctor and the patient (and ultimately all life in the universe) will be dead.

What is it about our lives that makes so many people feel that life is ultimately meaningless? The fact that we all will eventually die is one reason for this feeling, but it is not the only reason. The other main reason why many people feel that life is ultimately meaningless is that, as far as science can tell, there is no greater purpose for our lives. A scientific picture of the world portrays the origin of human beings as "the outcome of accidental collocations of atoms". Both individually and collectively, human beings came into existence due to accidents of chance. As individuals our existence was made possible by the reproductive success of our ancestors; as a species our existence was predicated by chance mutations which happened to confer an adaptive advantage to our evolutionary ancestors in the environments in which they found themselves. Because we cannot discern any indications that we were put on this Earth to fulfill a purpose given to us by an intelligent being, our existence does not appear to be part of some greater plan. If the absence of a higher purpose is what makes life ultimately meaningless, our lives would be just as meaningless if they were eternal. Conversely, if being part of a higher purpose gives our lives meaning, then our lives would be meaningful even if death ended them forever.

Is it really the case, however, that the absence of a greater plan for our lives renders life meaningless? Here too, a moment's reflection will show that a lack of greater purpose in life is irrelevant to the meaning of our lives. How would a greater purpose for our lives give meaning to our lives for us? Suppose, for example, that we found out that millions of years ago extraterrestrials genetically manipulated the hominid line in order to produce a species of greater intelligence suited to their needs for slave labor and have not yet returned to the Earth to enslave us. In such a case our existence would be part of a greater plan and would confer meaning to our lives for the extraterrestrials, but it would not give meaning to our lives for us. Our being part of a divine plan can only confer meaning on our lives if we accept our role in that plan as meaningful to us; but, as in the case of extraterrestrial enslavement, what is meaningful to God may not be meaningful to human beings. Furthermore, so long as we are ignorant of a greater plan for our lives--which we certainly are--we cannot know what our role in such a plan is and thus it cannot make life meaningful to us. Our activities are worthwhile for their own sake, not because they fulfill some unknowable transcendental purpose.

These considerations show that we must create our own meaning for our lives regardless of whether or not our lives serve some higher purpose. Whether our lives are meaningful to us depends on how we judge them. The absence or presence of greater purpose is as irrelevant as the finality of death. The claim that our lives are 'ultimately' meaningless does not make sense because there is no sense in which they could be meaningful or meaningless outside of how we regard them. Questions about the meaning of life are questions about values. We attribute values to things in life rather than discovering them. There can be no meaning of life outside of the meaning we create for ourselves because the universe is not a sentient being that can attribute values to things. Even if a sentient God existed, the value that he would attribute to our lives would not be the same as the value that we find in living and thus would be irrelevant.

What makes our lives meaningful is that we find the activities we engage in to be worthwhile. Our determination to carry out projects we have created for ourselves gives our lives meaning. We feel that life is meaningless when most of our desires which we regard as important are frustrated. Whether we regard life as meaningful or meaningless depends on the degree to which our important desires are frustrated. The judgments that we make about our lives on these points are the same regardless of whether one's life is eternal or not or whether it is part of a greater purpose or not.
Perhaps the secret to a meaningful life is to focus on those desires which we can fulfill and diminish those which we cannot--provided that we know the difference between the two.

Hi All again...

kekeke... not bad hoh... one long (quite long la) entry from me actally invited longer entries fr you guys...

I dun think i will RS any time soon... too many considerations... plus... i never get sick enough to RS... even the worse headache or flu doesn't deter me... maybe my tolerance threshold is really high... or maybe like wat Frost mentioned, it could have been the people (some only) you look forward to see, work with... biang together... that pulls u through...

And well, like i mentioned, i have never wanted to classify friends... and of cos, i spend time with the ones i m comfortable with...

Not sure if i shld advise Frost now... working hard to ATTEMPT to get a higher PB really doesn't work these days... Seniority does counts... and it counts big time... or maybe CAT status also counts(i'm still a CAT C)?

okie... guess we're really getting negative here... let's move on!

Wow time flies and before I know it, term has unofficially ended, exam starts tomorrow, and I will be back in Singapore after a long long time away..haa..and in such a long/short span or time, Manu, Lancer, Pixie, Rats all getting married?! Suddenly makes me feel old..lik people around me are all getting married..HAHA...well congrats to all of them as well! Legoz, Silver, when are each of you taking the plunge and walking down the red carpet as well???? haa n of cuz I dun mean the 2 of u walking down it together! BUT YOU NEVER KNOW...haaaa

Apparently workplace hasnt changed much from what I read..haa but u know, just chill..I always look forward to going to work because of people lik the two of you who are there..so hopefully in that same capacity you two can look forward to going to work n seeing ur frens..well, not forgettin to work hard at the same time to ATTEMPT to raise ur PB to the level of those who "do not deserve it"...but all these dun really affect me for now so I guess I'm better off just being a listener now yea..hee..on another note, come 4th June, I'll see u guys around Mindef yea? Drop by AMD branch and look for me pls, cuz I dun think i have clearance to go down into H..haa :p

For now, time to head to school on a nice sweet Sunday morning to attempt to study...oh btw..love is in the air..it is in the air......

Halo All!

It's Sunday!!! Time flies super super super fast... coming to an end of weekend again... yet to have enough fun, let alone rest...

Tml is another hectic working day... with manpower strink and step-up flying tempo... It has become so bad that Friday was my first time controlling on a shared console (with Swat) standing, on the another comms panel (no security breach).
"What could have gone wrong, will go wrong" has been the widely used "R/T" by almost everyone lately... especially me... even if you effect the most superd RV plan...

Recently, someone triggered me to some thoughts...
How do you classify/categorize your friends or people you know? Do you grade them by level, i.e. 1, 2 or 3? By closeness? By duration? By decription, hi-bye vs good? By grade, ok vs good vs best?

What do you all think?

Honestly and seriously speaking, i've never given serious thoughts to give a category, grade or classification. A friend is a friend.

Dictionary Definition:
1: one attached to another by affection or esteem
2a: one that is not hostile b: one that is of the same nation, party, or group
3: one that favors or promotes something (as a charity)
4: a favored companion

So, if the definition itself has encompasses almost every "categories"... Not sure if there's a need to categorize in clear all friends...

But having said so, there're indeed friends whom you will give different treatment and varies affection. Strictly by feel, you'll tend to take care of this one more, seek advices from that one more, pour out your troubles to one more, share your joy to another more, dislike this one more (yes, u can dislike a friend, but as long as he/she is not an enemy or hostile, he/she is still a friend, my thought), hang out with this one more, more comfortable with the other...etc etc... Pardon my incompetent, treatment to friends is strictly by feel... really do not know how to categorize in clear, in words, in... watever...

Not long ago, a friendship was put into test(result of the test is still unknown but 99%, the murderer won). The murderer of this friendship is none other than $$$. The murderer has ended a friendship or more than 3 years in a 3v1 scenerio.

$$$, people say it's not 万能的 ($ can't buy things, mostly intangible things like relationships...with friends, family, love ones... 但没有它却万万不能... (you can't do things with friends, family and love ones... can't help those in need).
I thought, $$$, is really a scary thing that is created to put everything(eg.relationships) into tests... Family ties could be forsaken, not long ago, elderly parents sueing children for not giving them monthly allowances, Used-to-be loving couples in courts over 赡养费；Friendships ended, news on friends killing/quarelling...

blah blah blah... i tink i blah too much... side-track from friendship to $$$... sorry... old le... getting naggy...

bottomline, i thought, as long as u treat people/friends with your real self, friends will be friends, nothing will come out bad from it, no one will be hurt, and nothing can/will hurt the relationship/mutual affection.

That's all i have. Time to relax... less than 24 hours to working week again...
